I want to understand probability and uncertainty as a concept in society and its applications such as learning algorithms and statistical procedures used in resource allocation and their ethical implications. After my Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom, I got involved in exactly doing that by working towards a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering at Syracuse University in New York. I am interested in a broad range of applications of statistical learning algorithms, most importantly causal inference, in areas such as bioinformatics, financial markets, material science, text mining, music, philosophy, politics and a combination of them.
I grew up in the southern part of Germany and started to work on computers when I was eight. Back then I did not know how big the impact of software on our world would be as it is today. I was just playing around. By the age of 12, I had sold a website each to my hairstylist and to my piano teacher, because I saw that they needed one and that I was able help them out. Soon, I felt that static content websites would decrease in importance, so I got into web application development. I came up with a flashcards trainer available at temboapp.de. Then, I realised that you can only achieve great things not on your own, but only as a team. So I joined brokenmusic.com when I was 16 and built its web platform from the ground up.
In my last year at school, I noticed that there were not really any inspiring resources for students interested in computers, so I founded a programming club and taught 12 students Android and web development for a year. Later, at the University of Exeter, I started a programming course for Ruby on Rails and soon after turned my attention to Code Club UK to help out at elementary schools by teaching programming. After school, I travelled California for some weeks where I learnt how to surf and explored the Bay Area where I got experience Silicon Valley from first hand.
