Life goals: 2015 Quarter 4

10/18/2015

I know this one is delayed by 18 days, but better late than never. Let’s get right to it:

How the last quarter went

Music
I had my ukulele with me in Berlin but I can count the occasions I played it, late at night, on one hand. It was good, but it can get better. I have bought myself a very compact music controller (Akai MPK mini) and I have already played around with it this quarter twice! I want to complete a song by the end of this quarter. One song and one song only.

Open source
I have failed very much at attacking this task. Open source is really more like a life-long work, I feel. I think I will only succeed in completing this goal if I find some project which by chance is also worth publishing Open source. Therefore, I will postpone this project until I have some code which is worth sharing. Going heads in into an Open source project you do not profit from in your daily life is not efficient. Ruby on Rails was close, but not close enough. There is a chance my web crawler project could be one. (See below)

Cooking
I failed at the goal of eating vegan pretty much the first day. The office next door had an all-day (!) BBQ and being someone that tries to save every penny I could not resist the all-day free food. From there on my resolution had been postponed. Not eating meat is less expensive and it can work, but at the current stage of food infrastructure I am personally unable to accomplish this goal as cooking vegan is not a that big priority for me to teach myself this kind of cooking and I just really like meat. I am really sorry. This is something worth reconsidering after University. Or later. Otherwise I have learned a lot of recipes and have not died of hunger, yet, so I think this is ok.

Sports
I have pushed away boxing this term completely, because it I wanted a flexible schedule and my elbow still hurts a lot from hitting that air really hard that one time. Additionally, I want to use my time at university to try new sports. For this year I will set myself the goal of running a marathon at the end of 2016 quarter 2. Not fast, just make it!

Writing
I failed at writing pretty much as I failed at doing Open source. That’s ok, but I still want to at least write my thoughts down regarding my Pebble time, because the experience has been noteworthy.

Books
I finished this goal at the beginning in one day! I read “Start-up nation” on my way to Germany from the UK. It was a good read, entertaining and potentially misinforming. I probably will take a look at Israel first-hand. I am pretty sure I have already exceeded this goals multiply times for this quarter.

Reassessment
As said, I am 18 days late, but hey, I made it. :) The next reassessment should hopefully be closer to the 1st of January, 2016.

Goals I am picking up

“Artificial Intelligence”
Because there is such a big buzz currently around this topic, I wanted to get my own perspective instead of having to rely on the media and scientific articles. As a consequence I got some books and I will work through them the next 9 months.

Web-Crawler
I want to build a software simple to use which allows to curate a lot of data of certain topics of the internet. As easy as that. :)

Statistics
Because AI involves statistics from time to time I thought I might brush up on it, so I got myself some books.

Mathematics
When I got the books on statistics I realised that I can also get some backgrounding maths so I got the books for the BSc Maths. That should do the job.

University
With all these things in mind, I still want to get a first with my PPE course which by the way now is PPE with a proficiency in applied data analysis!
